The world's first electric car MF "Ampere" has now gone a distance equivalent to six times around the equator since its inception in 2015.

"A milestone for Norwegian innovation, but also a gratifying indication that we have saved the environment for a consumption of about 3 million liters of diesel," said Norled CEO and owner of MF Ampere Ingvald Løyning in a press release.

The battery charger MF «Ampere» runs daily on a route between Lavik and Oppdal on the Sognefjord.

"When we built and seated" Ampere ", Norled, along with the Fjellstrand in Hardanger yard, was unique in its kind and" Ampere "a world sensation. Success with a green ferry option has had positive effects and we are both happy and proud to see that the development and use of battery packs have become very important in the political management and debate about the green shift, "says Løyning.

MF «Ampere» is a full-electric ferry. On the other hand, if the ferry had been on diesel, it would spend about 3 million liters of diesel on the same route, which would result in a discharge of 108,000 tonnes of CO2.

Fjellstrand in Hardanger built the world's first conventional hybrid air suspension, MF «Ampere». There are now dozens of electric ferries in order. Experience with "Ampere" shows that fuel costs by an electric ferry are significantly lower than in a conventional ferry.

"This proves that it is worth investing in green technology - both for the environment and for the wallet. Of course, there are some starting costs that need to be taken into consideration, but over time, we see that green technology is good business, "says Løyning.

He praised the Norwegian Public Roads Administration for announcing a tender competition that promised to lend itself to innovation and a developmental holiday.
"The result was" Ampere "which, in our view, became the Norwegian environmental showcase for innovative ferry design that the Norwegian Public Roads Administration wanted," says Løyning.

Good regularity

"Ampere" has 34 daily departures on weekdays and has a capacity of up to 120 cars and 350 passengers on board.

- As "Ampere" was the first green ferry, we have obviously experienced some childhood diseases. Therefore, it is now very pleasing that the regularity in 2018 has been high at 98.7%, as the deviations are due to a combination of both weather and wind as well as some technical challenges, "says Løyning.

Huge international interest

MF «Ampere» received considerable mention and was noticed too far beyond Norway's borders.

"This, we think, is the beginning of the story where the green shift will give a renaissance for the Norwegian maritime sector. If the industry uses this technological advantage and the display window, we think that this can help Norwegian yards succeed in the transition after the oil age, says Løyning.

He adds that the biggest challenge for Norwegian decision-making authorities is that the eagerness, after switching to environmentally friendly solutions, becomes so great that all investment funds are channeled into one and the same technological solution.

"Technological developments go very fast, and our concern is first and foremost that the authorities that claim shipping companies are looking for solutions where all funds will be locked to 2018 technology. Then we risk the industry outdated in a few years.

"Our experience with" Ampere "also shows that it is extremely important that the authorities have cooperation, good insight and understanding of the challenges an electrification means for energy supply, adjusted infrastructure, open innovation and the debate about ownership," says Løyning.
